Argonne National Laboratory Assistant Materials Scientist – Functional Nanoscale Heterostructures Group in Lemont, Illinois
The Functional Nanoscale Heterostructures Group of the Materials Science Division (MSD) aims to understand the novel and emergent behavior in nanoscale magnetic, and resistive switching heterostructures. Our focus is on exploring the fundamental science to understand how the energy landscape governs the emergent domain behavior and transport behavior of these materials through geometric patterning, confinement and through interfacial interactions.
In this exciting opportunity, we are seeking an assistant materials scientist to contribute to this research by focusing on understanding the underlying physics of complex nanomagnetic heterostructures and their magnetotransport behavior. The heterostructures would consist of novel magnetic materials such as van der Waals materials, non-collinear antiferromagnet/ferromagnet interfaces, or synthetic antiferromagnets. Of particular interest is exploration of their behavior using advanced microscopy (electron microscopy, scanning probe, and magneto-optical Kerr microscopy) experiments. Although exceptional candidates in all areas of experimental condensed matter and materials physics will be considered, particular emphasis will be placed on expertise in materials and phenomena towards use-inspired research relevant to microelectronics.
In this position, you will:
Conduct experimental laboratory work with a variety of magnetic characterization systems such as atomic force microscope, MOKE, Lorentz TEM, and low temperature probe station
Perform micromagnetic modelling and integration with experimental large data sets
Think and work independently and effectively collaborate to conduct research in a highly interdisciplinary environment of materials scientists, physicists, and chemists
A Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, or a related discipline with 1-3+ years of experience
Experimental and theoretical background in magnetism, and microscopy (optical, scanning probe or electron) applied to nanostructures
Strong, demonstrated background in experimental magneto-transport property measurement in ferroic nanostructures
Experience in thin film and nanostructure synthesis and lithographic patterning
This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in materials science, physics or related discipline at the PhD level or equivalent
