Argonne National Laboratory Assistant Physicist in Lemont, Illinois

The Accelerator Systems Division of the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory invites applications for a staff Assistant Physicist position in the Accelerator Operations and Physics Group.

The successful candidate will:

  • Take a significant role in maintaining high-reliability operation of the APS injector, which includes a linac, a particle accumulator ring, and a booster.

  • Contribute to activities to support injector improvements, APS-U commissioning and operation.

  • Improve injector operations by carrying out experiments, processing and analyzing data, and performing simulations and/or theoretical analysis.

  • Carry out general accelerator physics activities by performing machine studies independently to diagnose and resolve operational issues.

  • Actively maintain a positive working relationship with APS technical staff through communication and collaboration.

  • Contribute to ongoing research on applications of machine learning to accelerator operations.

  • Contribute to R&D activities for future accelerators.

  • Document research results and conduct presentations at meetings and conferences. Publish research results in the refereed journals and conference proceedings.

Position Requirements

Required:

  • Experience in operating an accelerator independently and carrying out beam experiments.

  • Knowledge of accelerator theory, accelerator simulation, beam control and measurement techniques.

  • Strong programming skills.

  • Proficiency in the Python programming language.

  • Oral and written communication skills for presenting work results and ideas.

  • Familiarity with an EPICS-based controls environment on Linux.

  • RD2: Bachelor's and 5+ years experience, Master's and 3+ years experience, Doctorate and 0 years experience, or equivalent

Preferred:

  • Ph.D. in physics or applied physics with 2+ years of postdoctoral experience.
