The X-Ray Imaging Group (IMG) of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory, seeks applications for one Beamline Scientist in the field of high-speed polychromatic x-ray diffraction and full-field x-ray imaging. IMG operates 2-BM and 32-ID beamlines of the APS with a broad set of full-field imaging instruments including ultrahigh-speed imaging, nano-meter resolution 2D and 3D imaging and high-speed micro-tomography. IMG also develops scientific software methods for data analysis. These instruments and methods support the APS users’ scientific programs and the independent beamline scientists research activities, in very broad areas including materials science, geology and biology.
The successful candidate will take a scientific lead role in the high-speed polychromatic x-ray diffraction and full-field x-ray imaging program, where high energy x-rays provide the opportunity for studying the structure evolution of materials in highly dynamic processes. He/She will guide the successful completion of R&D activities and is expected to independently develop new technical solutions and scientific applications for programs of interest to the X-ray Science Division. In particular a new laser system for additive manufacturing (AM) applications has recently been implemented at 32-ID beamline. The candidate is also expected to take part in the growing AM activities and lead the evolution of this program.
The position also includes responsibilities for coordinating, operating, maintaining, and upgrading the 32-ID beamline with the goal to maintain and grow innovative user programs in the area of ultrafast x-ray imaging/diffraction, real-time radiography, to support APS user operation, and to coordinate engineers and support staff assigned to projects.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Experience with designing and conducting in situ and operando full field imaging and diffraction experiments
- Ability to work well in a team environment
- Skill in oral and written communication of scientific results and experimental plans.
- Development of software, preferably using Python, related to the control of sample environments, data acquisition and data analysis, for beamline experiments.
RD2 Requirements:Bachelor’s Degree and 5+ years of experience; Master’s and 3+ years; Doctorate and 0 years, or equivalent.
