Argonne National Laboratory Division Director - Accelerator Systems Division in Lemont, Illinois

Argonne National Laboratory invites applications for the position of Director of the Accelerator Systems Division (ASD), at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). The APS is a high-brightness, hard x-ray synchrotron light source in the Photon Sciences Directorate of Argonne, and one of the large-scale scientific user facilities funded by Basic Energy Sciences in the Office of Science of the Department of Energy. The facility counts 68 experimental facilities that attract more than 5,000 unique scientific users each year carrying out research in various disciplines in the natural sciences. The APS is one of the most productive large-scale user facilities in the world, with more than 40,000 publications to date, many societal impacts, and operating in direct support of the nation’s economic competitiveness. The facility is currently in the final stage of a major accelerator upgrade to a 4th generation storage ring that will deliver world-leading X-ray brightness. The upgrade will also transform our X-ray research capabilities by delivering 9 new beamlines and upgrades to 14 of our existing beamlines. The APS Accelerator Systems Division (ASD) is responsible for the entire APS accelerator system. They provide physics and engineering support for the Laboratory's Advanced Photon Source (APS), pursue innovative physics research, and develop new technologies profitable to the science of accelerators and future storage rings and X-ray Free Electron Lasers.

The ASD director is a member of the APS senior management team, contributing directly to the facility-level direction for operations, the strategic initiatives at the APS in the photon science directorate, and the broader R&D directions supported at the laboratory level. They provide leadership to drive technological and operational excellence at the APS for the entire accelerator complex, including the LINAC, particle accumulator ring, booster synchrotron, the 6 GeV storage ring, and insertion devices. By working collaboratively with the X-ray Science Division (XSD) and APS Engineering Support (AES) division, they enable a world-class user program at the APS and support operational excellence of the facility. They directly contribute to the economic, technical, and scientific strength of the United States by actively collaborating with other facilities and institutes at Argonne, other national laboratories, and participate in strategic international collaborations.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership for the Accelerator Systems Division to position the upgraded APS as a world-leading 4th generation synchrotron.

  • Drive operational excellence of the accelerator systems by developing multi-year strategies and execution plans for the modernization and maintenance of the APS accelerator systems.

  • Push the frontiers of technology for accelerator-based light-sources by developing an advanced R&D program, including research on synchrotrons and compact X-ray Free Electron Lasers.

  • Promote and maintain high standards in Environmental, Safety, Health, and Quality Assurance for all ASD’s activities.

  • Actively participate in the DEIA efforts in PSC and initiatives at the Laboratory level, fostering a culture that values diversity and inclusion.

  • Lead and manage a talented and diverse team of scientific, technical, and professional services staff, creating a strong teamwork culture and engagement across all functions.

  • Build an environment that promotes the personal development of employees, knowledge exchange and the attraction of new talent in accelerator physics.

  • Partner with the Argonne Accelerator Institute and the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator to foster a vibrant platform for R&D in emerging electron-accelerated technologies and participate in accelerator projects at Argonne and across the DOE complex, including initiatives in high energy physics and nuclear physics when applicable.

  • Establish collaborative practices with cross-functional teams (Project Management Office, Financial Team) to develop strong project delivery and monitor discipline across the division.

Position Requirements

Qualifications, experience, and skills:

  • Ability to think strategically and drive divisional alignment to institutional goals and objectives.

  • Experience in leading and managing teams in complex technical environments at group level or above and fostering collaboration between multidisciplinary teams.

  • Experience in leading people, performance, and talent management.

  • Track record of promoting an inclusive environment.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of accelerator physics, engineering, and technology.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the operations of complex, state-of-the-art accelerator facilities, with a minimum of 10+ years of experience in accelerator operations, research, development, or construction.

  • Comprehensive skill in developing creative solutions to complex scientific, technical, and management problems.

  • Demonstrated ability to drive innovation in accelerator-based technology as an individual contributor and to lead teams in this environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to attract funding internally or through external grants.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage project portfolios at group level or above.

  • Understand financial management and procurement practices and demonstrated ability to drive accountability.

  • Good communication skills supporting engagement with sponsors, stakeholders, and advisory groups.

  • Ability to effectively manage relations with sponsors and maintain effective relations with multiple stakeholders.

  • A PhD in accelerator physics or related discipline is preferred.
