Argonne National Laboratory Instrumentation Health Physics Technician in Lemont, Illinois

Provide field and laboratory support for radiological protection program. Measures, assesses, and documents radiological conditions in workplace. Position Requirements

The Radiological Protection division invites you to consider applying for our Health Physics Technician opening in our instrumentation group. In this role, you will provide technical support, installation, maintenance, calibration and servicing of radiological instrumentation using a variety of measurement and test equipment. You will also apply electronics theory and knowledge of electronics and commercial instrumentation to install, calibrate, troubleshoot and service electronic instruments and systems. An active Illinois Driver’s license to operate a government vehicle is required.

In this position, you will:

  • Calibrate, maintain, upgrade, troubleshoot and repair radiological instrumentation, associated components, and other similar electronic equipment.

  • Maintain logs and technical documentation by taking measurements and recording observations related to maintenance, system performance, and system modifications.

  • Participate in wide ranging activities such as: coordination of activities among other groups, documentation/configuration control and diagnosing problems on complex electronic equipment and computer-based systems.

  • Perform in a team environment with changing priorities.

  • Receive continued training and instruction.

  • Meet all requirements of the qualification process and on-going continuous education coursework, as specified, is a requirement for this position.

We expect you to have:

  • Considerable knowledge of electronic design, and repair techniques to component level diagnosis; good knowledge of electronics theory; and some knowledge of computer hardware and software.

  • Demonstrated skill in producing work that meets rigorous quality assurance requirements.

  • Proficiency in the use of soldering stations, hand and power tools, and general shop equipment is required.

  • Established work record demonstrating the ability to problem solve with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to work proficiently within a customer-service environment to provide support, schedule, and perform repairs and calibrations.

  • Experience with radiological instrumentation and working with radiological sources is a plus.

  • Interpersonal and communication skills required to interact effectively and tactfully with internal and external customers and to successfully develop effective working relationships.

  • Some experience in customer service environment is preferred.

This role may be hired as a Health Physics Technician III or Health Physics Technician SR. The level will be determined by the final candidate’s level of education, experience, and skill.

  • Health Physics Technician III – This level of skill is typically attained through completion of an associate degree and with 2 or more years of related experience, or equivalent.

  • Health Physics Technician SR – This level of skill is typically attained through completion of an associate degree and with 5 or more years of related experience, or equivalent.
