The APS Upgrade project will install nearly 1300 new accelerator magnets and is building the team to perform magnet field quality and magnetic center measurements on each magnet. This position will work under the direction of the Magnet Scientist and Engineer to set up the Magnet Measurement Laboratory and its associated test benches. The test benches will utilize laser tracker, rotating coil, Hall probes, and rotating wire systems to perform the required measurements.

The person in this position will need to become trained in the operation and maintenance of these systems. This requires familiarity with both mechanical and electrical systems. Any prior experience with setting up and operating scientific instruments is desirable. The person will also physically set up the measurements, which will require use of materials handling equipment including forklift, pallet jack, and overhead cranes as well as typical hand tools.

  • AS in Engineering or Science or equivalent experience
  • Good Electronics and Computer Skills
  • Familiarity with use, setup, and safe operations of electrical and mechanical systems
  • Experience with installation and operation of precision measurement systems is preferred, but not required
  • Prior experience with magnetic measurements is desirable, but not required
