Argonne invites applications for the position of Director of Materials Science Division (MSD), one of the five research divisions within the Physical Sciences and Engineering Directorate. Major ongoing research programs in the division include hard and soft condensed matter and materials physics, including the science of synthesis, materials chemistry, including energy conversion and storage, and electron, neutron and x-ray scattering. The Director should provide leadership that positions the Division as an international pioneer in materials science, building on current divisional strengths and laboratory capabilities, and ready to respond to rapidly emerging opportunities such as those in quantum materials, quantum information sciences, soft matter, and artificial intelligence.
In addition to the scientific leadership described, the Materials Science Division Director will have responsibility for the research programs within the Division through long-term planning, preparation of initiatives, establishment of policy and priorities and interactions with the funding agencies, and the broader academic and laboratory research communities. In addition, the Director will develop and maintain an excellent and diverse scientific and technical staff, and will foster and maintain high standards in environmental, safety, health, and quality assurance for all Division activities. The Director will also be responsible for establishing MSD as a core contributor to the broader Argonne National Laboratory S&T strategy through strategic interactions with other divisions in the PSE directorate and with divisions in other directorates.
In these roles, he/she will interact with Laboratory Management, DOE program sponsors and various other sponsoring entities to review and promote the divisional research and development activities. In addition, the Director will manage multi-disciplinary scientific, technical and professional support teams and promote divisional interests in Laboratorywide initiatives, such as x-ray sciences, electrical energy storage, and high performance computing.
Ph.D. in a relevant science or engineering field, no less than fifteen years experience, an internationally recognized research stature, and demonstrated accomplishments in scientific leadership and management.
