Argonne National Laboratory Nuclear Incident Response Specialist in Lemont, Illinois

Multiple positions are available for a growing program in nuclear incident response planning and operations for foreign nuclear reactors. These positions will leverage expertise in nuclear engineering, emergency preparedness/incident response, and/or foreign affairs to serve as advisors to policy organizations across the U.S. Government on planning for and responding to foreign reactor incidents. These positions will work closely with responders in the Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST) to provide input to public health and safety guidance development for U.S. citizens, allies, and partners overseas. The successful candidate(s) will be able to synthesize current events to support regular written product developments for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Ukraine Task Force.

These positions will work closely with a team of nuclear engineers and incident response specialists at Argonne and NNSA to develop contingency plans for specified reactors and facilities, and, if needed, provide technical inputs during an emergency. This work currently focused heavily on support to the NNSA Ukraine Task Force. The position requires extremely strong written communications skills, covering expository and persuasive writing for technical and non-technical audiences. The positions also require excellent briefing skills for technical and non-technical audiences.

The position consists of mostly office work including regular written product development in coordination with principal investigators, technical analysis, and some modeling and simulation work. Domestic travel to Washington D.C. and other national laboratories will be required and there is a possibility of foreign travel.

The positions are located at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, IL. There is a possibility for one position in Washington, D.C., depending on qualifications and experience.

Position Requirements

Required knowledge, skills, and experience:

  • A degree in nuclear engineering or directly relevant experience.

  • Knowledge of one or more reactor technologies, domestic or foreign.

  • Ability to develop regular written products for technical and non-technical audiences, building a narrative and connecting disparate events over time.

  • Organizational and time management skills.

  • Public speaking and presentation skills.

  • Skills in PC-based computer systems using word processing, presentation, spreadsheet, and other typical office software applications.

  • A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Preferred knowledge, skills, and experience:

  • Experience in emergency preparedness/nuclear incident response.

  • An active Q and SCI clearance.

Other:

To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship and will be required to obtain and maintain Q and SCI clearances, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract. Minimum Education/Experience Requirements

This position can be hired at one of two levels; the selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD2 or RD3) dependent upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills. The minimum requirements of the two levels are as follows:

  • RD2: Bachelor's & 5+ yrs, Master's & 3+ yrs or Doctorate & 0 yrs

  • RD3: Bachelor's & 8+ yrs, Master's & 5+ yrs or Doctorate & 4+ yrs
