Argonne National Laboratory PA4/PA5 Head of Energy Storage Communications in Lemont, Illinois

Argonne National Laboratory is hiring a strategic communications professional to lead communications for its broad portfolio of energy storage research. We’re looking for a talented communications professional who is passionate about science and technology and their role in creating a more sustainable society.

The successful candidate will serve as Energy Storage Communications Manager or Head of Energy Storage Communications, depending on skill level and experience.

The position supports and promotes Argonne’s world-leading portfolio of energy storage research and the Argonne Collaborative Center for Energy Storage Science (ACCESS). Argonne’s cutting-edge energy storage science has enabled electric vehicles to travel farther, electronic devices to last longer, and renewable energy to be integrated into the nation’s electric grid. Argonne’s battery research program spans the continuum from the discovery of new materials for advanced batteries, to scaling those new materials up to industrial scale, to battery diagnostics, to deployment by industry, and recycling.

The role plans, coordinates, sets priorities for, and executes a wide range of communication products and services. The position is responsible for developing communications goals and objectives to enable the success of Argonne’s energy storage programs; implementing innovative strategies for providing services; executing communications products and initiatives; and advising energy storage leaders in the ACCESS organization and across the laboratory. The successful candidate should have experience in working closely with organizational leaders to develop and execute strategic communications that support scientific goals.

Under the direction of the lab’s Head of Scientific and Technical Communications and as a member of the lab’s Communications and Public Affairs directorate, they will partner with peers representing other Argonne science and technology areas to execute communications for activities and initiatives that reach across laboratory areas. They will be able to leverage the skills of Argonne’s teams of professional writers, editors, graphic designers, photographers and videographers in the creation of communications products.

Position Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to translate the needs of complex research organizations into communications solutions that meet business goals.

  • Ability to develop and maintain excellent relationships with organizational leaders, leveraging excellent listening and communications skills to understand, anticipate and represent management’s point of view to various audiences.

  • Ability to identify organizational priorities and proactively design, implement and update communication strategies and tactics to support those priorities as they shift and change over time.

  • Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of the subject matter and trends applicable to the unit’s science and partnerships.

  • Ability to define target audiences, set goals for communications efforts and prepare information products that convey specific types of scientific, business, marketing, and news information to those audiences.

  • Able to write and edit in a variety of formats, in varying levels of formality, with strategic attention to tone.

  • Able to translate scientific and technical content for both basic and sophisticated audiences, focusing on the impact of the work in real world terms.

  • Ability to cultivate and maintain productive working relationships with internal and external customers at all levels.

  • Demonstrated skill in team-building, negotiation, and working effectively in a collaborative team environment.

  • Demonstrated excellence in project management, planning, strategy, and driving projects to successful outcomes by facilitating the action of others.

  • Innovative problem solving. 

  • Knowledge of characteristics of audiences for scientific and business information. 

  • Client service mindset, able to take in and clarify objectives and goals of clients.

  • Deadline driven, highly responsive without creating an atmosphere of stress and anxiety.

  • Flexible and adaptable with highly fluid situations and strong personalities.

  • Conscientious budget manager and steward of laboratory resources.

  • Experience working in a scientific or technical organization, such as a research laboratory or academic institution, is preferred.

This position can be hired at one of two levels, and the minimum requirements for each are as follows:

  • Energy Storage Communications Manager (PA4): Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, English, journalism, or a related scientific/technical discipline, and 6+ years’ experience, or equivalent.

  • Head of Energy Storage Communications (PA5): Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, English, journalism, or a related scientific/technical discipline, and 10+ years’ experience, or equivalent.
