Argonne National Laboratory Postdoctoral Appointee - Battery Systems in Lemont, Illinois

Join our dynamic team at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) as a Postdoctoral Appointee in the Structural Science Group (SRS), where you'll be at the forefront of groundbreaking research in battery technology - more specifically, In situ and operando characterization of novel battery systems! This exciting opportunity invites you to contribute to the Electrochemical Science Research Alliance (ESRA) hub, focusing on the innovative characterization of battery electrodes and electrolytes.

What You Will Do:

As a key member of our research team, you will leverage state-of-the-art in situ and operando synchrotron-based X-ray techniques—such as X-ray powder diffraction, pair distribution function analysis, and tomography—to unveil critical insights into battery materials. Your role will include:

  • Designing New Electrochemical Cells: Shape the future of battery technology through the development of advanced cells for operando studies.

  • Characterizing Cutting-Edge Materials: Investigate organic cathodes and solid-state electrolytes to enhance energy storage capabilities.

  • Innovating Flow Battery Characterization Tools: Contribute to the advancement of methodologies that will propel flow battery research forward.

Position Requirements

  • This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related field at the PhD level with zero to five years of employment experience.

  • Experience in conducting in situ and operando synchrotron experiments

  • Development of sample environments experiments especially using beamlines at synchrotrons.

  • Development of software related to the control of sample environments and data acquisition for beamline experiments is a plus

  • Skill in oral and written communication of scientific results and experimental plans.

  • Ability to work well in a team environment

  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

  • Ability to understand, value, and promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Background in batteries

  • Knowledge of diffraction, crystallography, and approaches to advanced analysis including structural refinement and modeling.

  • Familiarity with TOPAS software package
