Argonne National Laboratory Postdoctoral Appointee - Bioimaging applications of combined focused ion beam and x-ray nanoprobe in Lemont, Illinois
Argonne is a multidisciplinary science and engineering research center, where talented scientists and engineers work together to answer the biggest questions facing humanity, from how to obtain affordable clean energy to protecting ourselves and our environment. Ever since we were born out of the University of Chicago’s work on the Manhattan Project in the 1940s, our goal has been to make an impact — from the atomic to the human to the global scale.
The person hired for this role will play a key role in pushing the boundaries of multiple imaging technologies to enhance the biological research capabilities at the Advanced Photon Source facility.
The main responsibility is to advance the applications of plasma focused ion beam technology for biological specimen preparation and subsequent imaging and chemical analysis with synchrotron-based X-ray microscopy. Examples of applications include structural and chemical analysis of single bacterial cells, bacterial colonies, subcellular organelles of mammalian cells, 3D cellular aggregates, and tissue sections, among others. The candidate will also actively contribute to the operation and further development of multiple instruments for biological applications, including synchrotron-based microscopy instruments, a dual-beam SEM, and a confocal light microscope with a cryogenic stage
Ph.D. degree with the focus on biology, biochemistry, bioimaging or related disciplines within the last three years.
Considerable experience in at least two of the following fields: electron microscopy of soft materials, focused ion beam, x-ray imaging of soft materials, cryogenic microscopy
Considerable experience with basic biological sample preparation (e.g. culture, fixation, dehydration, coating, histochemical labeling, etc)
Experience with instrument infrastructure and automation is a plus
Experience with cryogenic microscopy and cryogenic biological sample preparation is a plus
Demonstrated experience working successfully as part of a team in a collaborative and multidisciplinary scientific environment
Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external collaborators and ability to work in a team environment
