Argonne National Laboratory Postdoctoral Appointee - Electro-catalysis for CO2 conversion in Lemont, Illinois

We invite interested candidates to apply for a Postdoctoral Appointee position on scale-up science for emerging technologies, with a primary focus on electrochemical technologies for upgrading CO2 to value added chemicals. This position will involve a joint appointment with the Energy Systems and Infrastructure Analysis (ESIA) Division, and the Chemical Sciences and Engineering (CSE) Division at Argonne.

In this role, the candidate will design, synthesize, and evaluate cutting-edge electrocatalysts for converting CO2 into valuable chemicals and enabling water splitting, and perform comprehensive catalyst characterization, leveraging chemical/physical synthesis techniques combined with other electrochemical methods. Collaborating with modeling and simulation teams, the candidate will contribute to catalyst/electrolyzer system design, optimization, integrated process modeling, techno-economic analysis, and environmental impact assessments. Additionally, the candidate will prepare reports, presentations, and manuscripts to communicate project progress and outcomes effectively.

The candidate must demonstrate the ability for convergent thinking and will receive a supportive and enabling environment to develop research projects, grow research collaborations, communicate impactful research outcomes in peer-reviewed journals, and support other related projects within the team’s portfolio.

Position Requirements

  • PhD in chemical engineering, chemistry, material science or related physical sciences field.

  • Knowledge and experimental expertise in synthesis and characterization of electrocatalysts for the CO2 reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reactions.

  • Knowledge of and experimental expertise in evaluating electrocatalysts using RDE, RRDE, H-cell methods, as well as testing in a full electrolyzer.

  • Knowledge of and experimental expertise in catalyst-material characterization techniques.
