Argonne National Laboratory Postdoctoral Appointee - Electrochemical Energy Storage in Lemont, Illinois

The Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral appointee to develop and conduct research on fundamental understanding of novel secondary battery chemistries through use of structural and electrochemical characterization. Incumbent will work with Electrochemical Energy Storage department researchers and partners at on and off-site facilities to conduct experiments.

Under the guidance of a supervisor, synthesis, characterization and electrochemistry of battery materials for lithium-ion and beyond lithium-ion systems. Work will entail investigation of the surface and bulk structural properties including electrochemical and characterization using spectroscopic and related methods.

Plan and conduct research on battery materials with characterization techniques that include electrochemical, structural, mechanical and chemical methods, while adhering to Laboratory and Divisional Environmental, Safety, Health/Quality Assurance practices and policies.

Analyze data, prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed publications, presents papers at scientific meetings, and prepares reports, presentations, and papers for group meetings or meeting sponsor reporting requirements.

Develops and maintains laboratory equipment and facilities.

Serves as a resource person for Group members and other ANL staff personnel in solving problems and seeks technical advice from ANL staff for his/her own research effort.

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science or related disciplines with 0 to 3 years of experience or equivalent

  • Knowledge of and experimental expertise in one or more of the following applicable spectroscopy (especially NMR), synchrotron or microscopy methods for structural characterization and experience in electrochemical characterization, coin and/or other cell making and testing

  • Expertise in lithium ion or related electrode materials and cell making and testing is a big plus

  • Considerable interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills

  • Knowledge of chemical diagnostic methods and knowledge of handling of air-sensitive materials

  • God skill in data processing, evaluation, and interpretation
