Job Information

Argonne National Laboratory Postdoctoral Appointee - Geoscience FWP of the Interfacial Processes Group in Lemont, Illinois

The Interfacial Processes Group of the Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee. The successful candidate will perform research on the structure and reactivity of rock-forming mineral (i.e., silicate, carbonate, and oxide minerals) surfaces during reaction with aqueous solutions.

The specific research will focus on, but not limited to, evolution of interfacial structure and chemistry under flow, such as changes in electrical double layer at a charged mineral surface and dissolution (and reprecipitation) of sparingly soluble minerals. Under the guidance of a supervisor, the postdoctoral appointee will use a combination of in-situ X-ray surface scattering and various imaging approaches. The work also involves the interpretation of experimental data and the presentation of results at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed literature.

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree level with 0 to 3 years of experience or equivalent in geochemistry, materials science, or a related field

  • Knowledge of interfacial science and crystallography

  • Considerable experience in synchrotron X-ray scattering experiments and the state-of-the-art microscopies (such as atomic force or electron microscopies)

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in general analytical methods and practices

  • Experience in programming for data analysis

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated creative and proactive approach towards scientific problem solving

  • Demonstrated ability to carry out independent and collaborative research
