Argonne National Laboratory Postdoctoral Appointee - Heavy Element and Separation Science Group in Lemont, Illinois

The Heavy Element and Separation Science Group in the Chemical Sciences & Engineering Division of Argonne National Laboratory solicits applicants to fill a postdoctoral position.

This position will contribute to research accelerating the clean up and remediation of the Hanford Site waste tanks, among the most challenging environmental remediation projects in the United States.

The research will explore the chemistry of plutonium oxide clusters, nanoparticles, and colloids; studying their surface chemistry and reactivity in aqueous systems with the goal of tuning their reactivity to achieve chemical separations.

The candidate will be responsible for the synthesis of plutonium oxide nanoparticles, their characterization using a wide array of techniques including X-ray diffraction, synchrotron based X-ray spectroscopy and scattering methods, solid-state and solution-state spectroscopic techniques.

A knowledge of other characterization tools including FT-IR, Raman, potentiometry, and dynamic light scattering would be an asset.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic, diverse research group with complementary expertise in inorganic and physical chemistry, separation science, as well as condensed matter physics.

Opportunities will be provided to participate and collaborate with cutting edge programs in machine learning and synchrotron science.

The applicant is expected to hold a Ph.D. with background expertise in chemistry, geochemistry, or physics together with excellent oral and written communication skills.

The successful candidate will be responsible for working independently and as part of a team, developing experimental plans, performing experiments, analyzing data, and safety documentation.

Additionally, the successful candidate will be responsible for the preparation of manuscripts for open-literature, peer-reviewed publications and presentations at scientific meetings based on their research findings.
