The Nuclear Science and Engineering (NSE) D ivision is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Appointee- Mechanical Engineer to work on advance nuclear energy as a proven, sustainable non-carbon energy source through research, technology development, design, and analysis applied to current and emerging programs of national and international significance. Argonne has led the development of civilian nuclear power systems since the dawn of the nuclear age. In this role, the selected individual will use their expertise in the areas of digital-twin, computational mechanics, finite element modeling, high-performance computing, fracture and fatigue modeling and data analytics.

  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of one or more in the areas of digital-twin, computational mechanics, finite element modeling, high-performance computing, fracture and fatigue modeling and machine learning techniques.
  • Strong background in finite element modeling (with hands on experience in finite element code writing) and use of commercial finite element software such as in ABAQUS and/or ANSYS.
  • Advanced knowledge and significant experience in one or more programming languages such as Python and/or MATLAB.
  • Knowledge in machine learning toolkits such as PyTorch, Tensorflow or scikit-learn is not necessary but will be given preference.
  • Knowledge on parallel computing experience is not necessary but will be given reference.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, oral and written communication.

This level of knowledge is typically achieve through a formal education in mechanical, aerospace, or civil engineering or associated field at the Ph.D. degree level and 0 years’ professional experience, Master’s degree & 3 years, or Bachelor’s degree & 5 years’ of relevant experience.
