Job Information

Argonne National Laboratory Postdoctoral Appointee - Organometallic Chemistry in Lemont, Illinois

The Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division is seeking a postdoctoral appointee who conducts research as part of a multidisciplinary team in supported molecular inorganic and organometallic catalysis. The project will involve designing, synthesizing, and characterizing new metal-ligand complexes, supporting these complexes on metal oxide and/or non-traditional support materials, and evaluating the catalytic activity of these materials and how specific metal-support interactions can be leveraged to modulate this reactivity.

This research program will include studies towards understanding reaction mechanisms through reaction kinetics analysis and other physical organic and inorganic techniques.

Position Requirements

  • Knowledge of and experimental expertise in synthesis and characterization of highly air-sensitive transition metal complexes

  • Understanding of kinetics and thermodynamics as applied to catalysis

  • Experience with conducting and interpreting experiments to probe catalytic reaction mechanisms.

  • Proficient in written and oral communication

  • Experience with analytical techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy. Experience with spectroscopies suited to supported molecular species such as DRIFTS and X-ray absorption spectroscopy would be an asset but is not a prerequisite

  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD (received or expected to receive in the next six months) in organic, organometallic, inorganic chemistry, or related discipline, with zero to five years of experience in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience
