Argonne National Laboratory, in partnership with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), seeks a postdoctoral research associate to work on a joint project with the NIST Ion Storage group on precision measurements using optical frequency standards.
The project aims to improve the stability of an optical clock based on quantum-logic spectroscopy of 27Al+ by extending the system to multiple ions and operating the clock with entangled states, approaching the Heisenberg limit of frequency stability. Measurements of the frequency ratio of this optical clock and other optical clocks at NIST will be used to search for and constrain physics beyond the Standard Model, including drifts of fundamental constants and new models dark matter.
We are looking for a candidate with experience in:
- Experimental atomic physics, preferably in the areas of laser-cooling, ion trapping and quantum information.
- Laboratory experience with laser optics, analog and digital electronics, computer control and data analysis are required.
- The successful candidate will be expected to spend a considerable fraction of time at NIST, which offers an exciting and collaborative research environment located in Boulder, Colorado with close access to the University of Colorado.
We will continue accepting applications until the position is filled, ideally by January 2019. Please attach an updated CV including relevant research experience and list of publications.
