Argonne National Laboratory Scientific Associate / Senior Scientific Associate in Lemont, Illinois

The X-ray Science Division (XSD) enables world-class research using x-rays by developing cutting edge x-ray instrumentation and techniques; pursues research in the physical, chemical, environmental, and materials sciences. To accomplish this mission, it fully operates 39 beamlines and is a partner in the operation of 3 more beamlines at the Advanced Photon Source (APS).

This Scientific Associate / Senior Scientific Associate position provides technical support and operational assistance to the Surface Scattering and Micro-diffraction (SSM) group. Job duties include:

  • Supports beam-line operations, fabricates and prepares assemblies, prepares and monitors procurement of system components, and assembles and tests components and systems.

  • Participates in assembling all of the above into a functioning whole.

  • Provides repairs and maintenance as part of x-ray beam-line development and operations as well as visiting user experiments.

Position Requirements

  • Experience in supporting and operating complex and large-scale instrumentation in a scientific user environment.

  • Knowledge of equipment design, maintenance, and techniques for diagnostics relating to beamline operations.

  • Knowledge of interactions with scientific staff and users.

  • Knowledge of mechanical design and fabrication, also vacuum technology, motion control, electronics, and computers.

  • Skills in troubleshooting, diagnostics, and can exercise independent judgment in technical problem-solving.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

  • Understand, value, and promote diversity.

This position can be hired at one of two levels; the selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (PT3 or PT4) dependent upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills. The minimum requirements of the two levels are as follows:

  • RD1: Bachelor's & 0 years experience, Master's & 0 years experience, or equivalent

  • RD2: Bachelor's & 5 years experience, Master's & 3 years experience, Doctorate & 0 years experience, or equivalent
