Argonne National Laboratory Senior Artificial Intelligence Researcher in Lemont, Illinois
Want to help Argonne fight climate change, make our nation’s critical infrastructures more resilient, contribute to multiple scientific frontiers, and build your own portfolio as a cybersecurity and AI researcher? In this role, you’ll team up with world-class subject matter experts to use cutting edge artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to build systems that protect critical infrastructure systems from cyber threats and manage other risks to our national security. You’ll get to work on some of the biggest and fastest supercomputers in the world, and directly contribute to the missions of the Department of Energy, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense, and other federal sponsors. You’ll leverage cybersecurity, computer science, software engineering, and math to design models, simulations, data pipelines, testbeds, and work towards field deployments that make a real difference. You’ll also get to publish in respected journals and pursue funding for your own research ideas along the way.
Develops automated advanced artificial intelligence/machine learning solutions to protect the energy grid and other industrial control systems. Designs and implements new capabilities for prototype systems; develops and executes validation and demonstration strategies to enable transitions to industry. Leads research activities including developing ideas, identifying publishing opportunities, and writing articles. Responsibilities include all phases of projects and research activities as well as writing proposals and reporting the status and results of projects and research.
Position Requirements
To be considered, you should meet most of the following criteria:
Experience implementing and improving common AI paradigms (e.g., Supervised/Unsupervised Learning, Reinforcement Learning, Federated Learning) to solve complex business problems.
Experience with common data science and machine learning-related Python libraries (e.g., Pandas, Scikit-Learn, Keras).
Experience conducting formal research (writing proposals, performing literature reviews, designing experiments, publishing in peer-reviewed venues)
Experience developing original research ideas and capturing funding to execute them.
Experience writing object-oriented Python programs including unit testing and version control tools.
Experience using and administering Linux systems.
Basic knowledge of power systems fundamentals (e.g., SCADA protocols, distribution grids, fundamental electrical engineering principles)
Basic knowledge of cybersecurity fundamentals (e.g., access controls, encryption, common software vulnerabilities, and best practices)
Skilled at effectively collaborating with both technical and non-technical partners and stakeholders.
Skilled at sharing knowledge through partnering with and mentoring team members.
Skilled at oral and written technical communication.
Experience in a critical infrastructure sector, such as energy distribution is a plus.

To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract. A security clearance is not required but may be considered in the future depending on project assignments.

Education:
RD4: Bachelor's & 12+ yrs, Master's & 7+ yrs or Doctorate & 6+ yrs, or equivalent and relevant experience/certifications considered in lieu of formal education.
