Argonne National Laboratory Social Media Specialist in Lemont, Illinois
The Social Media Specialist develops and posts timely science and technology (S&T) content to Argonne’s primary social media channels, driving engagement and building audiences including the science-curious public, academia, industry, media, and local and federal government. In close collaboration with Argonne’s S&T communications teams, the Social Media Specialist will recommend and implement ways to disseminate and amplify Argonne content related to applied science and research accomplishments and discoveries, thought leadership, and promotional campaigns, using optimal channels and formats. The Social Media Specialist will also collaborate with other social media teammates to coordinate an ongoing calendar of social media content, manage social media conversations, and generate key metrics for quarterly reporting.
Responsibilities:
Create and schedule science and technology social posts for Argonne programmatic divisions, primarily sourcing editorial content generated through the S&T communications team.
Support the S&T communications team in creating original S&T social posts.
Research and develop content for additional, relevant science and technology social media posts as needed.
Coordinate with other social media teammates in developing and maintaining an ongoing social media calendar.
Amplify relevant external posts identified by the S&T communications team in a responsive and timely way.
Create templates and provide guidance for S&T staff to share Argonne content on their personal social media.
Coordinate with other social media teammates to monitor for and engage with friendly posts across primary channels, particularly posts emerging from social media ambassador initiatives.
Coordinate with other social media teammates to implement influencer strategies and tactics.
Compile data from identified Argonne unit channels for inclusion in quarterly reporting.
Assist other social media teammates with crisis management across social channels as needed.
Assume full management of social channels in the absence of other social media teammates.
Work with programmatic divisions to develop social media strategies for planning documents.
Coordinate with other social media teammates to initiate or support live social media events and social coverage of relevant on-campus activities.
Position Requirements
Proven experience directly administering at least two major, external-facing social media channels (e.g., Facebook, X, Instagram, and/or LinkedIn) for a business, non-profit, or academic institution for a year or longer.
Experience with building and administering an ongoing social media calendar, with a proven understanding of ideal timing and frequency of posts depending on the channel.
Proven ability to create and curate on-brand, engaging social content tailored to specific channels and audiences.
Skilled at crafting friendly and professional social media comments, responses, and captions aligned with the brand's voice.
Working knowledge of social media accessibility best practices.
Experience shooting and editing photos and video.
Experience managing social media channels with Sprout Social, Hootsuite, or similar multi-channel software.
Working knowledge of social media analytics tools (e.g., Sprout Social, Facebook Insights, Google Analytics) to measure social channel performance.
Self-motivated, flexible, and responsive to deadlines.
Conscientious steward of Lab resources.
