The High Energy Physics Division at Argonne National Laboratory carries out a broad program of research. Argonne staff members participate in collider experiments at the LHC, several experiments at Fermilab, and in a number of multi-wavelength sky surveys. Additionally, substantial research is carried out in the areas of advanced accelerator technologies, HEP theory, instrumentation and detector technology, as well as design and construction work in electronics and electrical and mechanical engineering. The Division has a complex computational footprint that covers supercomputing, capacity computing applications, HPC clusters, and workstation and laptop-scale scientific applications.

As a member of the Division, the Scientific Computing Associate will be responsible for supporting the technical operation and continued development of the computing infrastructure of the HEP Division in collaboration with joint efforts in the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility and Argonne's CELS and PSE Directorates, and other internal and external organizations, in order to enhance the productivity of the scientific staff and research colleagues. Areas of special emphasis of this position are data-intensive computing, HPC systems and clusters, creating technical documentation for end-users and internal use, and providing technical support to users across a wide variety of systems.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and more than 4 years of relevant job experience or Graduate degree and more than 2 years of relevant job experience.
  • Experience with UNIX systems administration, with emphasis on Linux and MacOS.
  • Proficient with systems administration tools and languages, such as Ansible, Perl, Python, C, PHP and shell scripts.
  • Experience in software development for large distributed systems
  • Expertise in installation, configuration, and management of large numbers of computers; associated hardware expertise.
  • Knowledge of internet resources, facilities, activities and techniques.
  • Experience with installation, configuration, management, and use of HPC systems such as Linux clusters, large SMPs, and hybrids.
  • Work with technologies such as TCP/IP and related protocols; networked file systems, including NFS.
  • Experience with mass storage systems and filesystems such as SAN, NAS, Lustre, GPFS and GFS.
  • Familiarity with the hardware and software of mass storage systems.

Scientific computing:

  • Solid experience with programming in C++, Fortran, and Python.
  • Experience with installation, management and use of software such as compilers, scientific applications and job resource managers.
  • Knowledge of shared memory multiprocessing with OpenMP.
  • Knowledge of networking technologies such as Myrinet and Infiniband and use of MPI implementations such as MPICH .

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD1 or RD2) dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills brought to the position, as well as the amount of relevant experience.
