Argonne National Laboratory Assistant Scientist - MSD Midwest Integrated Center for Computational Materials in United States

The Midwest Integrated Center for Computational Materials (MICCoM) in the Materials Science Division (MSD at Argonne National Lab (ANL) is looking for candidates to fill an Assistant Scientist position to

develop, optimize, and apply first principles codes to study materials for low power electronics and for quantum technologies. Codes of particular interest are those developed within and utilized by the center. A successful candidate will be part of a dynamic team working with a group of scientists from Argonne, University of Chicago, Notre Dame University and University of California Davis to design and engineer innovative studies of materials using state of the art algorithms and codes.

The candidate will primarily be responsible for:

  • Development of codes to study the excited state properties of semiconductor and insulators using density functional and many-body perturbation theory.

  • Optimization of codes on both CPU and GPU architectures

  • Development of the documentation of codes

  • Development of tutorials and of validation procedures

  • Study of excited state phenomena, including the calculation of photoluminescence and optical spectra.

The candidate will be expected to develop collaborations with other scientists within MICCoM, as well as mentor graduate students and post-doctoral scientists in MICCoM and MSD.

The candidate is expected to publish results in a refereed journal and make oral presentation at meetings, conferences, symposia, and seminars.  The candidate is expected to maintain a knowledge of the latest developments in the field and related groups through interactions and collaborative efforts.  The candidate will also participate in maintaining technical reports and other documents associated with the operation of MICCoM, along with reports on theoretical and computational progress, technical developments, and new initiatives to peer reviews and program managers.

All activities, as they apply to work performed by self or by personnel under supervision, will be executed in compliance with ES&H and security responsibilities established by Argonne National Laboratory's ES&H policies, Safeguards and Security policies, work rules, and safe practices.

This is a term position with the initial appointment for one year, with possibility for renewal up to two years.

Position Requirements

  • PhD in materials science, physics and chemistry or related fields.

  • At least three years post-doctoral experience.

  • Several years experience in writing and optimizing first principles codes for simulations of materials properties on CPU and GPU architectures.

  • Experience with C/C++, Fortran, Python and Cuda
