Argonne National Laboratory ATLAS Operator in United States

Argonne National Laboratory is seeking an ATLAS Operator in Lemont, IL. The ATLAS Accelerator at Argonne National Laboratory is the U.S. Department of Energy’s flagship facility for low-energy heavy-ion Nuclear Physics Research, utilizing superconducting radio-frequency technology to drive ions ranging from Helium to Uranium up to energies near the coulomb barrier.

In this role, you will:

  • Independently, and as part of a team, operate the ATLAS particle accelerator. This includes tuning the accelerator, diagnosing problems, performing maintenance and affecting repairs, assisting in upgrades, and working closely with scientific users to provide successful outcomes to nuclear physics experiments.

  • Act as Chief Shift Operator in charge of the safe operation of the accelerator, including but not limited to radiation safety, as scheduled.

  • Work with system experts, develop improvements to subsystems of the facility, for example beam optics, controls, energy detector systems, vacuum, etc.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline, such as physics or engineering, is preferred but not required.

  • Some knowledge of a technical discipline related to accelerators: electronics, cryogenics, computer control and automation systems, vacuum systems, magnets, mechanical systems, etc.

  • Some skills in understanding scientific and engineering concepts and in the technologies used at particle accelerator facilities.

  • Willingness to learn about and interact with the diverse technologies used at the ATLAS facility including radio frequency, analog and digital electronics, ion beam optics, vacuum systems, ion sources, magnetics, computers and distributed control systems.

  • Solid communication skills with colleagues, users and others.

  • Considerable skill in organizing own work and keeping necessary records.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
