Argonne National Laboratory Postdoctoral Appointee-Plasmonics Dynamics by Ultrafast Electron Microscopy in United States

Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee in Lemont, IL. The successful candidate would be part of a dynamic team, working with a group of scientists conducting a wide range of basic research using state-of-the-art characterization and nanofabrication facilities at the CNM. The candidate will primarily be responsible for developing an experimental program that enable generation of photons and electrons vortex beam carrying orbital angular momentum in UEM to bring new degree of freedom of light and electron in the study of light-matter interactions and plasmonics dynamics, and then explore their applications in plasmonics and nanophotonics, ultrafast phase transitions, and quantum. The candidate will collaborate with other members at the CNM and other Argonne Divisions. The candidate will be responsible for disseminating research findings by publishing them in peer-reviewed journals and delivering oral presentations at various professional meetings, conferences, symposia, and seminars. Additionally, they will stay informed about the latest techniques and expertise within related research groups through active engagement and collaborative endeavors. The candidate will maintain comprehensive knowledge of pertinent literature in the field. The candidate will also provide updates on experiment progress, the development of new techniques, and innovative initiatives to both peer colleagues and the manager.

Postdoctoral appointments are on a one-year basis, with a maximum term of three years, subject to performance evaluation. Reviews of applications will begin immediately until the position is filled.

Position Requirements

  • A recent Ph.D. achieved within the last 5 years or upcoming year and 0-3 years of experience in materials science, physics or a related field

  • Experience in ultrafast electron microscopy, ultrafast laser, transmission electron microscopy characterization of nanoscale materials or interfaces

  • Experience in study of ultrafast light-matter interactions in femtoseconds or picoseconds

  • Experience in plasmonics research and related electromagnetic field simulations

  • Experience in optical vortex beam or electron vortex beam

  • Experience in experimental data analysis by programming, evaluation and interpretation

  • Experience in nanofabrication is a plus

  • Effective oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to conduct independent research and publish research record in peer-reviewed journals

  • Ability to work well both in a diverse team environment and independently

  • Ability to solve problems efficiently

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in scientific research
